The Lost City of Z (pronounced Zed) is a place that no one is sure really ever existed. The legendary British explorer Percy Fawcett was convinced it was an ancient Amazonian civilization of great sophistication, architecture, and culture with streets and temples of gold. His obsession took him to the Amazon numerous times and in the 1920s, he set out with his 21 year-old son and some of his friends en route to the destination of his obsession: the lost city of El Dorado, the City of Gold, or simply called, The Lost City of Z. They were never seen again.

They weren’t the only people who went missing, either. After them, many researchers, explorers, archeologists, students and search teams also disappeared into the deepest crevices of the forest, never to be heard from again. Now that I’ve thoroughly depressed those of you reading this, how about playing a game? C’mon, you’ll feel better. Based on the tangled true story involving Col. Fawcett and a researcher after him, the game Lost City of Z involves much more adventure and entertainment in the form of a hidden objects game. As you explore the famous Amazonian rain forest, look for evidence to follow the trail of a missing National Geographic researcher. At your disposal are helpful tools and clues you find along the way. You will trace the paths of explorers who searched for the elusive and perhaps imaginary ancient kingdom. There will be mysterious messages to solve and you’ll need to uncover the trails of generations of explorers in your quest to find your sister. That’s right! Your sister is missing, too!

Tasty Planet is another one of our favorite Mac games, and will remind some gamers of Katamari Damacy, which involves a mission to rebuild the universe by pushing around a sticky ball accumulating everything it rolls on. In Tasty Planet, however, the tale is more of a science experiment gone very, very wrong. Instead of rebuilding the universe, you try to destroy it by eating it. You begin as a teeny tiny, unstoppable blob that gobbles up everything in its path, starting with amoebas and germs. The more you eat the more you grow in size but you can never eat anything bigger than your head. Isn’t that what your mother used to tell you? The next edibles you’ll want to devour and digest might resemble golf balls, cars, trees, houses. What’s next, planets? Yes! The bigger you grow the larger the meal possibilities. Yum!

The name “Flo” may sound familiar to some of you if you’ve been a casual gamer for a while. She’s the star character in all of the “Dash” games, the popular and long-running time management game series. In Avenue Flo, she’s back but the game is surprisingly NOT a time management game. This will be a relief if you hate those kinds of games. While the game is described as a sim, it’s rather, more like a set of various games and puzzles including some hidden objects, logic and a lot of adventure gaming. In the story, Quinn (of Wedding Dash fame) runs into too many problems right before the wedding of one of her clients, and it’s up to you (as Flo) to help her out. Explore three neighbourhoods of Diner Town (Avenue Flo, Bistro Bay and Yum Yum Square), meet people along the way for clues about what you’re suppose to do next, and pick up items to add to your inventory that you can use to solve puzzles. If you’re a fan of Flo games, you will probably connect with everyone because you’ll know all the characters from previous games. But if you don’t normally like these games, you might unexpectedly like it since it isn’t like all the other games. It’s also the first time, ever, where you’ll get to hear the voices of Flo and her friend, Quinn.

Bubble Ice Age

As if we’re not getting enough cold weather lately, even in places like sunny socal, here’s another game to remind you that the weather outside is frightful, but the games inside are so delightful. Bubble Ice Age takes place in a snowy, frozen and colorful place, a place where shooting icy bubbles of the same color cause a sort of avalanche. Match three of more of the same bubbles and they’ll fall off the board. Clear the board to move on to the proceeding levels. The game gets progressively more difficult so be prepared!

Ancient Egyptian mythology and historical facts meld together surprisingly in this new hidden objects game for Mac. In the game’s story, Anna and the Professor race to find the seven tears of Sekmet, a twist seeing that Sekmet is a warrior goddess associated with death and destruction and it was believed that the hot desert winds were her breath. She wasn’t known to carry many tears. However, since she was also seen as an Avenger of Wrongs, these tears, once found, would be able to lift a curse by “The Beautiful One Who Has Come,” also known as Nefertiti. As Anna gathers the essential artifacts to put an end to the curse, another problem arises: her stepbrother! Where did he come from and what does he want?
