RSS Writer The Missing Manual - INTRODUCTION
When Phelios.net created the free software called, RSS Writer, there was no documentation for it and it was left up to the user to figure out how it worked and how to use it. That's fine, I say. It comes with the territory of being a free application. It's a rather simple application and as an user of RSS Writer upon its launch, I did notice that it had some quirkiness and issues about it. However, it has recently been updated and is now working great. There are a few more functional things added and the bugs have been fixed. It could use some upgrades, and I'm sure there will be some in time, but for now, it remains a handy, little cool tool for you webmasters that want to offer your site to be syndicated and to be accessible by RSS Readers. I've written this little manual because I think it will be helpful to some people who might have questions about it and didn't know where to turn.

FIRST THINGS FIRST - WHAT IS RSS WRITER?

About RSS Writer by Phelios.net - The Description

If you’ve wanted to offer an RSS feed for your site but didn’t know how to do it, RSS Writer will become your next best friend in the internet world of Really Simple Syndication (RSS).

Most sites that have RSS feeds are using templates that automatically generate the .xml files needed to syndicate their sites. Some people don’t use those blog or CMS templates, and instead, are still using the traditional html code to create their web sites. If you are one of those traditionalists, and want to have an option so your site visitors can use an RSS reader to see your updated content, simply use RSS Writer to write your own .xml files easily.

With RSS Writer, all you need to do is fill in the RSS Writer information, save it and then upload it to your site. You’ll need to do that each time you add new content to your site. Make sure you have a link on your homepage to let readers know where your RSS feed is available.

GETTING STARTED - Information

When you launch RSS Writer, you'll see the initial screen.

This is for the general information of your site. The top half is your site's RSS DESCRIPTION. Fill in the Title, which is the name of your site, Description (a short description of your site), the link, and date.

For the the second half of this initial screen, you'll fill in information for graphics. Fill in the title (i.e., the name of your site), description, your site's URL and the URL of a graphic representing your site.

INPUT YOUR CONTENT - Items

At the top of the initial screen, you'll find a bar with 4 categories. Click on "Items" and you'll see this screen (below).

Then, simply fill in your content. You'll see "item title" in the left column. It should be highlighted in gray. Type in your content on the right column. First the item TItle, the link and the description. Click on the "Validate Changes" button and your entry should appear on the left column, as the title you named it. It should also appear on the pull down bar located on the right column under "Active Items." NOTE: If, for each of your items, you have an identical, consistent URL, you can input the URL as a default URL if you click on the "Default" button on the top bar, then input your default URL.

To add subsequent items, click on the "Add" button at the bottom left and you'll see "item #1" appear above your previously entered item. - I know it's actually your 2nd item but your first item is considered "item #0" i guess :-)

Anyway, keep in mind that:

* Your most current item will be placed on top of the list at the left, which corresponds well with RSS, as it will list your most current content first. Having said that, be fairly exact about the order you input your information because to-date, it's not possible to move around your entries. In other words, the input order is important in this version of RSS Writer!

* You must always click on "Validate Changes" to save each entry.

DEFAULT

If your items are entitled the same name and just needs to be differentiated using a number, then type your repeated name in the "Item Name" box, click on "Validate" at the bottom right - and go back to the Items page (by clicking on "Items" on the top bar. Once on the Items page, click on "Add" and your repeated titles will appear at the left with a number. As an example, say that all your items are called, "News". If you type "News" on the Default Title Item, and go back to the Items page, each time you add an entry, they will be named and numbered chronologically, "News1" "News2" "News3" and so on.

As mentioned above, the Default button on the top bar is used for repetitious URLs over several items.

For example, I use the default link of http://www.macgamesandmore
.com because if someone is reading my news from a reader and wants to read more or download one or more of my weekly picks, they will be sent to my homepage and will be able to find the appropriate info or downloads.

DELETING ITEMS
To delete an item from the left column, simply click on the item to be removed (make sure it is highlighted in gray), then click on the "Delete" button.

EDITING ITEMS
At any moment you may easily edit an entry by selecting the entry either from the pulldown menu under "Active Items" or click on the item in the left column.

SAVING
Once you've completed inputting all your item contents, save the file by clicking on the pulldown menu from the desktop menu bar: FILE, then SAVE. To save everything, name your file and click on "save." Note: It will be saved using a .XML extention but it is not necessary that you type that in when saving your file. It is automatically designated as a .XML file.

UPLOAD
After you've saved your file, and you'd like it to be available to your audience's RSS Readers, upload the file to your server, just like you upload your site's info as it changes.

FINAL NOTES
If you want to include images, you can hard code your html directly into the description. In the future, I'm hoping RSS Writer will have a item box for that and we'll be able to just type in the URL for an image, so it's automatic.

Make sure you indicate on your site that you have a RSS feed available and post your XML link to your website so your readers can subscribe to your feed. For example, on my site, macgamesandmore.com, you'll see on my homepage that I've placed orange RSS and XML buttons, along with link to my XML file. So, the buttons and link are linked to my RSS Feed which is located here:

  http://www.macgamesandmore.com/macgamesandmore.xml

If your initial information page will always have the same information, I recommend that you simply load a previous XML file (from the desktop menubar, click on File then Load), name it something new and work over that file. It will buy you some time as it will avoid inputting the same information more than once.

If you're very new to the world of RSS and feel lost, my recommendation would be to do a bit of RSS research online to learn more about it. Then, download a RSS Reader. I highly recommend NetNewsWire (lite). It is the best RSS Reader available for Mac and the lite version is free. Subscribe to some feeds, and see how the RSS world works. Later, you can subscribe to your own website's feed to see how others will view your feed's content.

Good luck.
