Virtual Villagers 4 The Tree of Life – The highly anticipated 4th edition of Virtual Villagers is finally here, and we’re incredibly happy about it! If you’re familiar with the Virtual Villagers real-time sim game series, you’ll see that there are many new features in Virtual Villagers 4, not just the same story and game play shuffled around. The story takes place on the eastern shore of Isola and centers on a dying Banyan tree. The Book of Legends takes you on an adventure with Charlie and Zoe, siblings who find a library book, which turns out to be a tome that holds the key to finding King Arthur’s legendary sword Excalibur. It’s a book so important that, in the wrong hands, could have devastating consequences. The two of them embark on a sort of wild goose chase to follow the book’s clues and, of course, to find the sword, all the while being trailed by three menacing men in black. This Mac game is a mixture of world travel in search of the famous sword, inventory-based puzzles, looking for hidden objects and a medieval meets modern thriller.

When I shop at a mall, I always see room for improvement there, wherever it may be. It usually comes in the form of me exclaiming, “Where’s H&M or Anthropologie?” Or, “Why don’t they have The Container Store or BCBG in this mall?” “Where’s Hotdog On A Stick? I want a lemonade!” And lastly, “Where on earth is BEST BUY!??” Now I can put my complaints aside and create my own ideal mall with this Mac game. The only way to do it right is to do it yourself! Sim gamers who’ve loved games like Build a Lot will really get into Create a Mall. As the name of the game suggests, your primary task is to create successful malls across the country. Penny Dreadfuls: Sweeney Todd

Short serial publications called Penny Dreadfuls were introduced in England during the 1800s. These fictional horror stories always embraced a macabre plot and each part of the story cost one penny. The String of Pearls: A Romance was one such penny dreadful, which is actually the original story that introduces Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. A brilliant musical, one of my favorites by Stephen Sondheim, as well as a movie were based on this penny dreadful. If you’re unfamiliar, Sweeney Todd’s a vengeful barber who kills his clients by giving them a REAL CLOSE shave, then gives their bodies to his girlfriend so she can make meat pies with them. Fun!

Now, on to the game. Of course, the story offers much more depth than the basic plot I’ve just described and there are side stories happening simultaneously: people and items are missing and mysteries must be solved. You’ll have several adventure quests to solve, as well as puzzles and there are a good number of hidden objects games, where you’ll be scouring through gritty, grubby 19th century London.

Lastly, there’s some singing in this game, but it has nothing to do with the original musical (I wish it did!). You can opt to skip ahead if you want to jump right into the game.

In this match three game meets sim game play, go back to high school as the beloved peacemaker … or would you rather make plans for total domination? Gold Miner Joe – There’s gold in them thar…mines. Collect all the gold you can get your grubby little hands on, use your dynamite wisely and avoid the Kentucky brothers like the plague. Super Text Twist – I’m a sucker for practically any challenging word game, so I’m starting off the year with Super Text Twist, which happens to be just that. My Favorite Mac Games of 2009

^{Before we kick in the new year, I wanted to post my favorite casual Mac Games from 2009. Obviously, there are so many more, but I have to prepare for the new year today so I had to limit the list to five.}

Pixie – Fence off or claim a majority of the playing board. When you claim areas, what was once barren, scary territory, turns into flowers, butterflies, magical mushrooms, and other positive thoughts. In other words, with your help, you and Pixie change the world into a happier place. Now, if we could only just as easily do the same in real life, but I digress. Click on the playing board and send a magical vine to block off areas of the board. You must claim more than 84% of the board to send Pixie on to the next level. Download it

Drawn - Gamers who thoroughly enjoyed Campfire Legends: The Hookman, have likely finished that game by now, and should be ready to move on to another awesome point and click adventure game. Good timing because now you can step into a different world, Drawn The Painted Tower, and immerse yourself in its magical game play. Zen Stones – As one of the most chill logic puzzle games I’ve played recently, it’s not surprising Zen Stone’s tagline is, “Relax, it’s just a game.” There’s no plot or story here and you are never on the clock so take your time to solve each level. No one cares if you take five minutes or an hour – or even more than that. Send stones from the outer board to the main playing field. Shoot to have three or more adjacent stones of the same color and they will disappear from the inner board. Do this until you clear the playing field to move on the next level. Take advantage of the many bonuses that will help you go forward. You will soon fall in love with these bonuses, especially the “UP” bonus. The game can be truly addictive for puzzle gamers. If you become stuck on a level, don’t get your undies in a twist. Just start over because afterall, it’s just a game. Download it

Princess Isabella A Witch’s Curse is rather, filled with so many different kinds of games, I don’t want to categorize it. Featuring marble shooters, logic puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, adventure quests, even a quiz – the game will keep you happily occupied wandering around this enormous regal home, solving, playing and ultimately defeating the wicked witch. World of Goo – My mom pronounces the word, “good” as “goo” because of her thick accent. So, when I hear “World of Goo,” a puzzle-y construction game, “good” does comes to mind but here it’s an understatement. World of Goo is rather a world of greatness. Getting your hands on black (or green), sticky blobs of jiggly goo has never been more entertaining. Using realistic game physics, build structures so that a required number of goo balls can get sucked up into an escape pipe. In a style that reminds me of Cartoon Network colliding with Edward Gorey, World of Goo offers clever writing, whimsical graphics, music and effects, and thoughtfully designed, complex levels. Anyway, the star can’t find anything for herself, so you can step in to help out. The game also beckons you to come to the rescue of the floundering production, which seems to be sinking by the minute. Scour through a variety of studio locations and discover a romance that can only be found on an imaginary ship that’s going under. Don’t let it, though!
