Virtual Villagers 4 The Tree of Life

The highly anticipated 4th edition of Virtual Villagers is finally here, and we’re incredibly happy about it! If you’re familiar with the Virtual Villagers real-time sim game series, you’ll see that there are many new features in Virtual Villagers 4, not just the same story and game play shuffled around. The story takes place on the eastern shore of Isola and centers on a dying Banyan tree. First, select a tribe – for example, a group of children or nursing mothers or a variety of tribes people with a mix of skills (which determines your difficulty level), each group having its own set of strengths and weaknesses. Work on your tribe and get it to thrive and populate the island, find collectibles and uncover fantastic mysteries – then you can pursue the many hidden puzzles scattered around the island, and as you solve them the tree will begin to heal. If your tribe succeeds, and the Tree of Life regains its original power, you will then find out the secrets of the magical island of Isola. Remember that this Mac game is in real time, so your tribe will age and events still take place even when your Mac is turned off!

Plants vs Zombies

In a war between plants and zombies, you’d imagine that the little vegetation soldiers would not have a chance. Not so, not so! Well, not necessarily so. It’s entirely up to you with this light-hearted Tower Defense Mac game. The cutest zombies you’ve ever seen are heading towards your house to invade it, and you need to mulchify, confuse and weaken them before they reach your front door. Use your arsenal of pea shooters, cherry bombs, purple devourers and more to fight the undead. Watch out for the pole vaulting zombies and check out the mini game of Zombie bowling, rolling potatoes.

Avenue Flo - In Avenue Flo, Flo is back but the game is surprisingly NOT a time management game. This will be a relief if you hate those kinds of games. While the game is described as a sim, it’s rather, more like a set of various games and puzzles including some hidden objects, logic and a lot of adventure gaming. In the story, Quinn (of Wedding Dash fame) runs into too many problems right before the wedding of one of her clients, and it’s up to you (as Flo) to help her out. Explore three neighbourhoods of Diner Town (Avenue Flo, Bistro Bay and Yum Yum Square), meet people along the way for clues about what you’re suppose to do next, and pick up items to add to your inventory that you can use to solve puzzles. If you’re a fan of Flo games, you will probably connect with everyone because you’ll know all the characters from previous games. But if you don’t normally like these games, you might unexpectedly like it since it isn’t like all the other games. It’s also the first time, ever, where you’ll get to hear the voices of Flo and her BFF, Quinn. Download it

Fairies – Not only do fairies exist, they need some assistance from you. The fairies, of all colors of the rainbow, have been captured by evil forces and have been placed in individual jars, which is where you come in. You then are set on an important mission to find them and set these beautiful, flittering pixies to liberate them from their glass prisons. Slide and match your way through 100 increasingly difficult and eye-catchingly gorgeous levels in your quest to release the fairies and set them free. Beware of locked jars! Download it

Bookworm Deluxe – This is one of my favorite word games for Mac. In Bookworm Deluxe, Lex the BookWorm is hungry. Not only that, you have to feed him and he doesn’t eat hamburgers or pizza, he feeds on words. To feed him, link letters together on the board to spell out words. He’ll reward you by giving you big points, but if you feed him too many short words and he’ll send down burning letters that could set the entire library on fire. Download it

Legend of Aladdin – Follow the legendary Middle-Eastern folk tale of Aladdin as he encounters his tumultuous fate and fortune through 120 levels of match 3 gem games. Fill up the magic potion bottle to activate the slide feature power-up, or collect coins to trade with the shrewd shopkeeper for power-ups to take with you as you go. Download it

Cute Knight – Take on the role of an orphaned girl, who just turns 18 years old. Her main goal is to find out what she’s meant to do in life. What will become of her? This will depend on how you play the game. Will she become a beggar, princess or cute knight? It’s up to you to guide her so she will find her true calling. In this sim/strategy game for Mac, train her in jobs and classes to develop her skills, make friends and find a sweetheart. She’ll need to use skills to conquer monsters in the dungeon, too! 50 storybook endings with huge replay value. Download it

Fun Friday of Five Mac Games

Deluxe Poc Mon – As the name suggests, this game is sort of like Pacman, the arcade game from the 80s, but here’s the big difference: it’s much more fun. Packed with all kinds of extras like magical bonuses, duels, guns, bombs, ghosts, lasers and more, it’s everything you wanted in the original classic game. Well, now you have ‘em. Play alone or with teams of up to three players. 100 levels, extra goodies to discover, adding your own music in the game and a kids’ mode for little ones or for gamers whose Poc Mon chops aren’t up to par. Download it

Westward 3 Gold Rush – Wrangle up your courage, don your chaps and choose a character from a choice of three: 1) Polly Hatchet, an experienced rancher; 2) General Amos Cutter, a calm and clever strategist; or, 3) Shawnee Longfeather, an Iroquois medicine woman. Each personality carries his/her own specific strengths and weakness, so keep this in mind when playing this western sim/strategy game. The town is flattened after a destructive tornado so rebuild the settlement from the ground up. Gold is abundant and all over for the taking, but bandits abound so watch your back and make certain the town thrives. Yeeeehaw! Download it

Mystic Mine – Following in the footsteps of the above Western-themed game, Mystic Mine takes you under the ground. Doesn’t that sound fun? Luckily, you won’t have to experience any claustrophobia down there in the mine playing this puzzle game for Mac. Collect the required number of coins or gems and finish your missions in the limited time imposed on you. Guide your mining car (or is it called a mining cart?), making sure you switch the tracks with the spacebar to go in the direction of the treasure. Plan fast and well because you really aren’t given much time per level. This fun little puzzler for your Mac features over 200 levels and lots of bonuses. (torch, key, balloon, oiler, dynamite!) Play with up to six people on one keyboard. Download it

The Conjurer – Imagine the most powerful and celebrity magician inviting the top 10 illusionists to his dark, spooky castle. Who’d fall for THAT trap? All of them, it seems. They all accept. Of course, this invitation comes with some strings. Each magician must conjure up his finest routine, the best he has ever delivered. Impressing is key and whoever performs the number one illusion or magic trick, will gain access to the greatest magician’s highly coveted secrets. The plot sounds simple but nothing is as it seems in the world of magic. It turns out that one of the competitors is out to kill the host magician. WHO is it? Obviously, someone who doesn’t want or need his secrets… Play through puzzles and magic tricks throughout this hidden objects game while discovering who the guilty party is…before it’s too late! Kivi’s Underworld – This RPG involves Kivi, a young Lumen warrior, leading a disastrous mining expedition, and unfolding uncharted territories to uncover a mythical (or so he thought) race of dark elves. Kivi is the lone survivor who makes it back to his home only to find that no one will believe him about the elves. He is in a fight of his life and must do so alone. He needs to recruit Lumens and fight off the elves with limited lives and powers. Download it

Gemini Lost

In this real-time strategy sim for Mac, the positions and alignments of the stars and planets don’t really matter as much as your own positions and alignments with the game’s characters and missions. Their needs and abilities and the ultimate goal to help out a small group of people lost on an unknown planet is your primary focus. Get your small group to learn skills, build bridges and become self-sufficient. Match up compatible couples and get them to multiply! When they have kids, wait for them to grow up before you put them to work. Explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and build a new civilization. Boldly go where no man has gone before. Oops, sorry about that geeky reference. Back to the game. In Gemini Lost, beware of diseases and other dangers that can impede your progress, and always remember that you have to find all of the Zodiac signs to move forward. The game continues even when your Mac is turned off, so something new and exciting will always be waiting for you when you return to the game.

Fun Friday of Five Mac Games

Bud Redhead – Bud Redhead will pluck at the heart strings of retrogamers and gamers in general, who love jump and run, Mario-like games. Although Bud has been around for some time now, it remains to be a popular choice in the world of casual gaming. With attentive and devoted development, the game progresses beautifully and naturally through four worlds in the space-time continuum. It gets players to want more so they can play through all the absolutely huge levels. It’s one of those games that you HAVE to finish. Bud Redhead took four years to produce and the dedicated work shows. It’s one of our all time favorite games that concludes with a twist (spoiler!): a showdown shoot ‘em up style ending against the Big Boss. Download it

Pirate Poppers – Yo Scallywags! Skillfully aim and shoot same color balls from your cannon moving side to side at the bottom of the game board. As you create chain explosions, catch power ups, bonuses, precious pearls, gems, gold, goblets and other booty to fill your coveted treasure trove. In Pirate Poppers, which is a variation of Zuma and Luxor, start off as a lowly Landlubber collecting valuable trickets and jewels, then work your way up the pirate ranks to become a proud Scurvy Dog. Perhaps being called a Powder Monkey is more incentive. Is a pirate’s life for you? While the game play incorporates some luck on your side, you’ll require some skill as well. Shoot for combo chain explosions, work fast and you won’t be sent to walk the plank.

Tasty Planet – Tasty Planet is another one of our favorites, and will remind some gamers of Katamari Damacy, which involves a mission to rebuild the universe by pushing around a sticky ball accumulating everything it rolls on. In Tasty Planet, however, the tale involves a science experiment gone very, very wrong. Instead of rebuilding the universe, you try to destroy it by eating it. You begin as a teeny tiny, unstoppable blob that gobbles up everything in its path, starting with amoebas and germs. The more you eat the more you grow in size but you can never eat anything bigger than your head. Isn’t that what your mother used to tell you? The next edibles you’ll want to devour and digest might involve golf balls, cars, trees, houses. What’s next, planets? Yes! The bigger you grow the larger the meal possibilities. Yum! Download it

Air Assault – This is a classic, action-arcade helicopter shooter with you leading a mission to fight terrorist forces to save the world. Fly your helicopter above enemy lines to destroy as many opponents and strategic peripheral elements (barracks, bridges, antennas) as possible. Use your skills, guns, missiles, rockets and whatever you can get your hands on to fight for the cause. As you progress, the game’s difficulty level increases. The game features 10 different power ups, over 30 types of enemies and 30 levels. Download it

Sprouts Adventure – If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to play God, here’s your chance. In this sim game for Mac, a devastating storm nearly wipes out an entire population of sprouts, which are cute, squeaky little beings. The few survivors remaining need help. This is where you step in. As ruler you must guide the sprouts back to their original prosperous life. How will you do that? The sprouts are counting on you to put them back on track and to return them to the lifestyle they once loved. Keep them fed, assist them in rebuilding their homes and land, help them invent wonderful toys to play with, and ultimately keep them happy and productive. Try to earn as many Karma points as you can and do remember to remove the weeds! Download it

ElimiNation is a classic, turn-based war game for the most meticulous and die-hard strategists. That being said, if you’ve never played a game like this before, it doesn’t mean it’s not for you. It means this game is for a very specific type of gamer, so you might be one of them. Pick a faction to play three of five campaign maps controlling Dark Brigade, Green Wings and Tech Empire. Each faction has its own unique units and characteristics. Maps include special events (reinforcements, resources, bonuses) and have their own special victory conditions, some by turn number, others, for example, by conquering a region. Play a Quick Battle (15 maps) to get a feel of the game before moving on to Campaign. Key pointers: Resources as well as strategy play important roles in ElimiNation. Chuzzle – Sometimes you want to sit back and play a light-hearted game filled with fuzzy, giggly creatures that squeak, sneeze and tease you. Don’t you? You can do that with Chuzzle, a slide and match puzzle game. These googly-eyed koosh balls on nitrous oxide will shed their feathery, fuzzy fur all over the place, transfer themselves into a scientist’s beaker until there are too many of them inside. Then, they’ll release happy Chuzzle squeals when they burst out of their temporary home, as you slide them around in search of same color matches. When matches are made, watch and listen carefully because they pop! Keep locks off of their heads during your time with them and they will remain as silly and as happy as ever. Download it

Mystery Stories: Berlin Nights – Dare to place yourself in the midst of an extensive case filled with travel to Berlin, technology dating back to World War II, a curious reporter, a sustainable engineer and unlimited renewable energy in this captivating hidden objects adventure. Search for clues all over Berlin and solve a labyrinthine mystery involving a state-of-the-art apparatus that was stolen from the Nazis before its completion. This machine could possibly resolve the global energy crisis! Beware though, a mysterious sect and cold-blooded ex-agents from former Communist East Germany are attempting to thwart your progress. The story and game play are interwoven magically and seamlessly and gamers will love the clever twists on hidden objects and the many bonus mini games within 94 levels. Download it

Spirited Heart – Create your own life story and destiny while taking the role of an elf, demon or human in this anime style RPG, or rather, a fantasy life simulation game according to its developers. Each character has her own personality, advantages, disadvantages, and the characters’ destinies will all be very different from each other. Begin your life with various attributes and abilities, or lack thereof, then build upon these basics by working or learning a skill. Each week (in game time), your life will change and be modified based on the decisions you’ve made, conversations you’ve had and the actions you’ve taken. You will encounter other characters, one of whom could possibly end up as your spouse. There are 26 possible endings, which provides hours and hours of playability. Will you fall in love with your soulmate and live happily ever after? Will you have a spirited heart? You’ll need to play the game in order to find out! Download it

Boggle – Hasbro has brought the popular board game to your Macintosh, but this version includes some twists. Shake the box of letter dice, watch them land and create as many words as possible with the the available letters and before the time runs out. With Boggle for Mac, however, the letters have to connect to each other on the board, giving you an added challenge over the classic board game for the entire family. By the way, when they say this is a game for the whole family, they really mean it; players of various ages will find their own level of difficulty whether they are small kids or young-at-heart grandparents.
