Puzzle Quest

Kakuro Epic for mac Puzzle Quest remains to be one of my favorite games because it manages to somehow marry an odd couple: a match three jewel game with a sim. Then, for good measure and years of happiness there’s some RPG thrown into the mix. Plus, there are endless amounts of side games, activities and conversations with elves and other mythical characters! Within a medieval setting it of course will ultimately involve an epic adventure of good versus evil. So, expect to become the hero (well, depending on how you will play) in this unique and unexpectedly refreshing hybrid of a game; Battle enemies, capture castles, recruit armies and fight with the ultimate goal of building an unstoppable empire that will prove your worth to the Warlords. In Wandering Willows, you and your hot air ballon are forced to land rather abruptly, and you find yourself in a strange place filled with quirky characters, pets, events and games. In this RPG/simulation game, you’ll be challenged with various tasks after meeting the community and your success with them will ultimately help get you back in the air and on your way. You will have help from different animals, but you have to train them so they’ll be useful to you. Consider Wandering Willows a cross between The Legend of Zelda, Nintendogsand Virtual Villagers or The Sims. 150 Quests, more than 40 different pets to collect and train.

Heileen 2

The following is a guest blog post from Celso Riva, head developer of Tycoon Games, as well as Winterwolves. Their popular games include: Spirited Heart, Summer Session, Bionic Heart, Universal Boxing Manager among others.

Heileen 2 for macHeileen 2 is the sequel to a popular visual novel game released last year. Like the first game, it features beautiful manga artwork, and is placed within a historical backdrop during the 17th century. Other than that, players will jump into the game and soon realize that this part 2 is entirely different from the prequel. In the story of Heileen 2, our heroine finds a deck of magic tarot cards related to the 7 Deadly Sins/7 Heavenly Virtues that have incredible powers. Using them she can go to sleep and have vivid dreams that will help her on her journey to leave the deserted (but is it really deserted?) tropical island where she was shipwrecked at the end of first episode.

She is there only with Ebele and Robert, two ex-slaves, but soon after she also finds Black the cat, who had a minor role in the first game, and now is a sort of spiritual guide for Heileen.

From the technical side, the game revamps the old quest system, which was present in the first episode, offering a full review of active, completed and failed quests. The quests now total 20, and the endings have increased in number as well; there are seven endings for both the seven Virtues and the seven Deadly Sins, plus an extra ending.

The game breaks away from the standard visual novel linear game play in that it allows the player to choose the order in which Heileen dreams. Picking different answers will lead to different situations every time. Just in the first part of the game there are over 80 different possible choices!

In sum, Heileen 2 is a game recommended to anyone who loves mystery, tropical islands, cute characters and… black cats!

Avenue FloAvenue Flo -  In Avenue Flo, Flo is back but the game is surprisingly NOT a time management game. This will be a relief if you hate those kinds of games. While the game is described as a sim, it’s rather, more like a set of various games and puzzles including some hidden objects, logic and a lot of adventure gaming. In the story, Quinn (of Wedding Dash fame) runs into too many problems right before the wedding of one of her clients, and it’s up to you (as Flo) to help her out. Explore three neighbourhoods of Diner Town (Avenue Flo, Bistro Bay and Yum Yum Square), meet people along the way for clues about what you’re suppose to do next, and pick up items to add to your inventory that you can use to solve puzzles. If you’re a fan of Flo games, you will probably connect with everyone because you’ll know all the characters from previous games. But if you don’t normally like these games, you might unexpectedly like it since it isn’t like all the other games. It’s also the first time, ever, where you’ll get to hear the voices of Flo and her BFF, Quinn. Download it

FairiesFairies – Not only do fairies exist, they need some assistance from you. The fairies, of all colors of the rainbow, have been captured by evil forces and have been placed in individual jars, which is where you come in. You then are set on an important mission to find them and set these beautiful, flittering pixies to liberate them from their glass prisons. Slide and match your way through 100 increasingly difficult and eye-catchingly gorgeous levels in your quest to release the fairies and set them free. Beware of locked jars!  Download it
Bookworm DeluxeBookworm Deluxe – This is one of my favorite word games for Mac. In Bookworm Deluxe, Lex the BookWorm is hungry. Not only that, you have to feed him and he doesn’t eat hamburgers or pizza, he feeds on words. To feed him, link letters together on the board to spell out words. He’ll reward you by giving you big points, but if you feed him too many short words and he’ll send down burning letters that could set the entire library on fire.  Download it
Legend of AladdinLegend of Aladdin – Follow the legendary Middle-Eastern folk tale of Aladdin as he encounters his tumultuous fate and fortune through 120 levels of match 3 gem games. Fill up the magic potion bottle to activate the slide feature power-up, or collect coins to trade with the shrewd shopkeeper for power-ups to take with you as you go. Download it
Cute KnightCute Knight – Take on the role of an orphaned girl, who just turns 18 years old.  Her main goal is to find out what she’s meant to do in life. What will become of her? This will depend on how you play the game. Will she become a beggar, princess or cute knight? It’s up to you to guide her so she will find her true calling. In this sim/strategy game for Mac, train her in jobs and classes to develop her skills, make friends and find a sweetheart. AzadaAzada – As one of my favorite adventure games, I absolutely must recommend this game today. Azada is for gamers who prefer a wide variety of game play while getting sucked into a captivating story. Find yourself locked up in a room with the game’s protagonist, Titus, trapped by his great uncle’s spell. In order to discover the whole story, solve numerous mind-twisting puzzles. As you progress through the five chapters each with eight pages, things begin to make more sense, the spell will be released and secrets will finally be revealed.  Download it
Atlantis Sky PatrolAtlantis Sky Patrol – In this visually sleek steampunk/art deco inspired orb shooter, you’re a member of Sky Patrol on a mission to confront the threatening weapons that were unleashed upon earth. Deluxe Poc MonDeluxe Poc Mon – As the name suggests, this game is sort of like Pacman, the arcade game from the 80s, but here’s the big difference: it’s much more fun. Packed with all kinds of extras like magical bonuses, duels, guns, bombs, ghosts, lasers and more, it’s everything you wanted in the original classic game. Well, now you have ‘em. Play alone or with teams of up to three players. 100 levels, extra goodies to discover, adding your own music in the game and a kids’ mode for little ones or for gamers whose Poc Mon chops aren’t up to par. Westward 3 Gold RushWestward 3 Gold Rush – Wrangle up your courage, don your chaps and choose a character from a choice of three: 1) Polly Hatchet, an experienced rancher; 2) General Amos Cutter, a calm and clever strategist; or, 3) Shawnee Longfeather, an Iroquois medicine woman. Each personality carries his/her own specific strengths and weakness, so keep this in mind when playing this western sim/strategy game. The town is flattened after a destructive tornado so rebuild the settlement from the ground up. Mystic MineMystic Mine – Following in the footsteps of the above Western-themed game, Mystic Mine takes you under the ground. Doesn’t that sound fun? Luckily, you won’t have to experience any claustrophobia down there in the mine playing this puzzle game for Mac. Collect the required number of coins or gems and finish your missions in the limited time imposed on you. Guide your mining car (or is it called a mining cart?), making sure you switch the tracks with the spacebar to go in the direction of the treasure. Plan fast and well because you really aren’t given much time per level. This fun little puzzler for your Mac features over 200 levels and lots of bonuses. (torch, key, balloon, oiler, dynamite!) Play with up to six people on one keyboard. Download it

Kivi's UnderworldKivi’s Underworld – This RPG involves Kivi, a young Lumen warrior, leading a disastrous mining expedition, and unfolding uncharted territories to uncover a mythical (or so he thought) race of dark elves. Kivi is the lone survivor who makes it back to his home only to find that no one will believe him about the elves. He is in a fight of his life and must do so alone. United States of PoolUnited States of Pool (new) – Cue up and travel across America accumulating postcards in different cities playing United States of Pool, a realistic computer simulation for Mac of the popular 9-Ball Pool game. USOP features 1 & 2 Person Arcade Mode, which only loosely adheres to the rules of 9-Ball. In 1 Person Arcade Mode, players will be required to earn a specific number of points before being able to travel to the next U.S. city. Arcade Mode also features bonuses: a superball, which is a “crazy” ball that changes the physics of it making it bounce more and is much faster than usual. Star bonuses earn you more shots and points. 2 Person Mode is the straight up game of 9-Ball. Download it now and run the table. Note: The Esc key will take you back to the main menu. Download it
Mythic MarblesMythic Marbles – Before people played games on their computers and game consoles, actual physical games existed. Really! Marbles was one of them but since we’re indoor computer gamers, the next best thing to do is to play it on our Macs. In Mythic Marbles play with all your marbles and use (don’t lose!) your marbles located at the bottom of the board to knock the rest of the marbles away. Don’t run out of marbles before you hit all the others off the board. By the way, watch out for the black holes and walls. 100 games. Download it
The Three MusketeersThe Three Musketeers – Following a faithful adaptation of the original novel by Alexandre Dumas with the same name, The Three Musketeers, an excellent RPG adventure and action game, will place you during a time in old France when chivalry was king, and jabbing someone through the heart with your sword was all too commonplace. The Clockwork ManThe Clockwork Man – Steampunk comes to you in the form of a hidden objects game for Mac, which is a refreshing example of setting itself apart from and above the rest of the games of this category. In The Clockwork Man, Miranda Calomy, an aspiring engineering student in 19th century London, receives a letter from her grandfather Cornelius, who is a famous scientist living and working in South America. Her grandfather is in need of some items for a project he’s working on. Although he’s ordered them, they’ve mysteriously disappeared and Miranda is to gather another set of these parts and bring them over to South America herself, accompanied by her trusty little steampunk sidekick, Sprockets. The game features unique zoom-in and scroll across game play along with strange science experiments, flying airships, steam-powered machinery and engaging puzzles. Download it
County FairCounty Fair – County Fair is a tycoon game/carnival simulation, which is one of the best made games of its kind. Being the sole surviving relative of a sickly businessman, you’ve been called upon to manage an empire of county fairs. Take control of creating the coolest amusement parks you can while keeping an eye on the bottom line. You will only be limited by your imagination and organization skills, if they’re not up to snuff. Once you get a hang of all the mechanics (the tutorial is indispensable), you will have a blast setting up the teacups, ferris wheels, shooting gallery, and much more – and providing the necessary good eats carnivals have to offer: deep fried candy bars, funnel cakes, pizza, cotton candy and anything else fit for the mandatory carnival tummy ache. pictowordsPictowords – As the name indicates this game for your Mac offers puzzles using the combination of pictures and letters. Think of it more like Pictionarymeets Scrabble with a twist, which will be perfect for word gamers wanting a different kind of word game challenge. At the beginning of each level, you’ll receive several picture tiles and several letter tiles. The pictures, or “pictos,” correspond to the actual spelled out words and not the sounds. Using the tiles, you must form as many words and as fast as possible. In essence, you must quickly combine pictures and letters to create words. It can sometimes be as easy as it sounds; other times not. Make sure to find the bonus words! Pictowords features hundreds of levels. Download it
