Gold Miner Joe – There’s gold in them thar…mines. Collect all the gold you can get your grubby little hands on, use your dynamite wisely and avoid the Kentucky brothers like the plague. Super Text Twist – I’m a sucker for practically any challenging word game, so I’m starting off the year with Super Text Twist, which happens to be just that. Don’t worry about it being a game and feeling like you’re wasting time. Think of it as a tool to sharpen your mind! You’ve got two minutes and thirty seconds to make as many words as possible with either six or seven random letters. Figure out the combination with the most letters and move to the next level. Sunset Studio: Love on the High Seas – In this hidden object game for Mac, search through star-studded Hollywood sets for hidden objects, and keep a costly blockbuster from sinking…literally. The temperamental and demanding celebrity of “Titanship,” Katherine Connick, is center stage in this game. Will Meline Deeoni be singing “My Fart Will Go On” on the soundtrack? Bad joke; sorry. They don’t always pay in cash but that’s okay because oftentimes you’ll need the potions and various gris gris they have in the barter agreement. Although you’ll be playing through a bunch of time-management levels and following the story of the magical egg, you’ll also be facing hidden object mini-games within, in which you must seek and find pieces of hidden objects. Avernum 5 – Both casual and hardcore RPG gamers of various levels of expertise will get into this classic subterranean epic adventure. You are playing from the point of view of a soldier of fortune of sorts, who gets sent by the Empire into the bowels of a hellish underground to find an escaped dissident. You’ve been sent to this heinous land to prove yourself worthy to the Empire and particularly, to the powerful Empress Prazac. Choose your soldiers wisely and for their strengths and weaknesses to handle the challenges in store for you. The Empire is counting on you and your team of fighters to prevail over your enemies slithering within the deepest crevices of the caves of Avernum. Will you be victorious or die a miserable death trying? Download it

Ashley Jones and the Heart of Egypt – It seems almost like a crime if I do not include a matching gem game but don’t worry, this one stands out among the hundreds out there flooding the Mac gaming world. You play the role of Ashley Jones, a young archeology student undertaking an archeological excavation in the heart of Egypt. As you advance in the game playing gem puzzles and collecting ancient artifacts, the more you learn about the jewel of the Heart of Ra, which is shrouded in mystery. Immerse yourself deep into a fascinating story, which is actually intertwined with real history. If you’ve played games like this you will no doubt experience the familiarity of match three game play but extra elements (power-ups, bonuses) thrown into the mix add much more addictiveness and outright fun. The Lost Cases of Sherlock Holmes – If Sherlock Holmes were alive today, he might say it’s elementary to find an outstanding hidden objects game, but believe me it’s really not the case. Help the peaceful land of Mungola defend themselves against the attacking hordes of Collosatropolis. Pictowords – As the name indicates this game for your Mac offers puzzles using the combination of pictures and letters. Think of it more like Pictionarymeets Scrabble with a twist, which will be perfect for word gamers wanting a different kind of word game challenge. At the beginning of each level, you’ll receive several picture tiles and several letter tiles. The pictures, or “pictos,” correspond to the actual spelled out words and not the sounds. Using the tiles, you must form as many words and as fast as possible. In essence, you must quickly combine pictures and letters to create words. It can sometimes be as easy as it sounds; other times not. Make sure to find the bonus words! Pictowords features hundreds of levels. Download it

Fun Friday of Five Mac Games

Bud Redhead – Bud Redhead will pluck at the heart strings of retrogamers and gamers in general, who love jump and run, Mario-like games. Although Bud has been around for some time now, it remains to be a popular choice in the world of casual gaming. With attentive and devoted development, the game progresses beautifully and naturally through four worlds in the space-time continuum. It gets players to want more so they can play through all the absolutely huge levels. It’s one of those games that you HAVE to finish. Bud Redhead took four years to produce and the dedicated work shows. It’s one of our all time favorite games that concludes with a twist (spoiler!): a showdown shoot ‘em up style ending against the Big Boss. Download it

Pirate Poppers – Yo Scallywags! Skillfully aim and shoot same color balls from your cannon moving side to side at the bottom of the game board. As you create chain explosions, catch power ups, bonuses, precious pearls, gems, gold, goblets and other booty to fill your coveted treasure trove. In Pirate Poppers, which is a variation of Zuma and Luxor, start off as a lowly Landlubber collecting valuable trickets and jewels, then work your way up the pirate ranks to become a proud Scurvy Dog. Perhaps being called a Powder Monkey is more incentive. Is a pirate’s life for you? While the game play incorporates some luck on your side, you’ll require some skill as well. Shoot for combo chain explosions, work fast and you won’t be sent to walk the plank.

Tasty Planet – Tasty Planet is another one of our favorites, and will remind some gamers of Katamari Damacy, which involves a mission to rebuild the universe by pushing around a sticky ball accumulating everything it rolls on. In Tasty Planet, however, the tale involves a science experiment gone very, very wrong. Instead of rebuilding the universe, you try to destroy it by eating it. You begin as a teeny tiny, unstoppable blob that gobbles up everything in its path, starting with amoebas and germs. The more you eat the more you grow in size but you can never eat anything bigger than your head. Isn’t that what your mother used to tell you? The next edibles you’ll want to devour and digest might involve golf balls, cars, trees, houses. What’s next, planets? Yes! The bigger you grow the larger the meal possibilities. Yum! Download it

Air Assault – This is a classic, action-arcade helicopter shooter with you leading a mission to fight terrorist forces to save the world. Fly your helicopter above enemy lines to destroy as many opponents and strategic peripheral elements (barracks, bridges, antennas) as possible. Use your skills, guns, missiles, rockets and whatever you can get your hands on to fight for the cause. As you progress, the game’s difficulty level increases. The game features 10 different power ups, over 30 types of enemies and 30 levels. Download it

Sprouts Adventure – If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to play God, here’s your chance. In this sim game for Mac, a devastating storm nearly wipes out an entire population of sprouts, which are cute, squeaky little beings. The few survivors remaining need help. This is where you step in. As ruler you must guide the sprouts back to their original prosperous life. How will you do that? The sprouts are counting on you to put them back on track and to return them to the lifestyle they once loved. Keep them fed, assist them in rebuilding their homes and land, help them invent wonderful toys to play with, and ultimately keep them happy and productive. Try to earn as many Karma points as you can and do remember to remove the weeds! Download it

Dirk Dashing – Put on your most geeky, hero demeanor Superman-style to become Dirk Dashing and save the world from the forces of E.V.I.L. In this side-scrolling, action adventure play as special agent Dirk Dashing. You’ve been commissioned to recover the seven largest diamonds in the world, which were stolen by international jewel thief, Pique Pockette. You’d think with a name like that Pique’s trail would take you to France but non monsieur, he actually takes you to the Bavarian Alps of southern Germany, where you must battle enemy agents, avoid traps and icy hazards, and solve mysterious puzzles. Dirk Dashing features 30 huge levels, including 3 secret levels. Download it

Airport Mania First Flight – Manage control towers and test your expertise at running several airports and handling all the necessary tasks it takes to make everything run smoothly. Travel through eight of the world’s busiest airports while you land a variety of planes, avoid delays and purchase upgrades. Keep alert on the job because it can be very tempting to take a little snooze. But don’t! Some planes carry precious cargo and you will need to expedite their landings. Others might require some repairs. Ensure that all maintenance and purchases have been done in a timely manner and that those frequent flyers out there make it to the gate on time. Airport Mania may look and feel like it’s for little kids but adults alike will love the unique challenges and wacky characters. Download it

Home Sweet Home – Sometimes upon entering someone’s home, you feel thrown back by the decor or lack thereof and think, “Woah!” If it were up to you, those mauve sofas and that garish rock chimney would have to go! But alas, that isn’t your job. Luckily, in Home Sweet Home, it IS your job! You can change anything you want in the decor with the power of carte blanche. You see, you are in charge of making home sweet homes for your clients. Before you get to work, learn about your clients’ tastes, then create fabulous interior designs. All you need to do is direct your build team to assemble it all. Let your creativity take over and you should be able to glide though solving 50 client requests. Home Sweet Home features more than 400 furniture pieces to work with and three modes of game play. Download it

Bejeweled 2 Deluxe – Bejeweled is considered the great, great, grandaddy of match three gem games, one of the first games of this genre that got millions of players addicted and coming back for more. We can’t explain this phenomenon so we’re just going to accept it and play. In this sequel to the classic game of gem-swapping, Bejeweled 2 continues the tradition with added features, new gems and special effects. With four different ways to play, solve the myriads of brain teasers in puzzle mode while up against the clock or kick back, relax and enjoy endless mode. Download it

Ricochet Lost Worlds – Ricochet Lost Worlds is not your typical brick breaking game so don’t quickly dismiss it. It goes far and beyond your expectations for a game of this type with unexpected features and game play. I’m usually not interested in brick bashing but Ricochet is surprisingly different and is actually a blast to play. Destroy all the bricks on the level by bouncing the ball off your paddle and into the bricks. Unusual power ups perk things up and will help get you through the levels quicker. Hidden, secret, special bonuses will come in handy, too, and thousands of levels are available to download. Download it
