The Missing Kaijin Companion

With the recent release of Kaijin, Phelios' new game, a "Shoot 'em Up" ("Shmup"), many gamers especially Mac gamers, were comforted to find another game of its kind to tackle. Information about Kaijin, however, seemed sparce, apparently, because Phelios embraces the philosophy that gamers should not be told everything about the game. Phelios believes that a big part of appreciating the game play is its surprises and revelations, much like the old arcade games. Phelios omitted a bit of information so if you'd like to discover the game's surprises yourself, do not read this. Otherwise, read on!

The Story

The year: 2546. The place: Planet Terria. For too long, genetically modified grown food, and pollution from the ocean and environment created a harmful impact on the natural food chain of Planet Terria. Much of the meat from animals that previously and commonly graced Terrian dinner tables was no longer safe as these animals were fed their own bones and also ate genetically modified plants. Those who consumed any mutant plants and meat, developed incurable diseases that directly destroyed their central nervous system; it was the modern version of Mad Cow Disease from centuries earlier on Planet Earth.

But this time, the population survived, as they understood that eating flesh was fatal, so most Terrians survived on food they grew themselves. The other survivors on Planet Terria were several particularly resistant species of insects as well as some resistant forms of ocean creatures. All life except the Terrians were considered…very, very bad.

Over time, the insects and sea dwellers mutated in wildly unusual ways and became stronger and more intelligent. Some began to develop brain abnormalities, which resulted in an increased aptitude of 5000% in their IQ’s. The Problem: As their new intellect grew, so did their appetite for planet domination. They now feel that Terrians are their Public Enemy Number One. So, they developed a secret army and are now ready to eradicate the Terrians with all of their mutant force.

Your Mission
You and your ship, the "Kai-jin" are the last hope for the Terrian Kind... With Kaijin’s powers at your disposal, you must annihilate the baddy bugs with your lasers, fireballs, homing smart bombs and devices.

You must act like pesticide and save the planet from total bug domination. The population of Terria is depending on you.

Kaijin?
Your ship is named Kaijin, a Japanese word with several meanings: monster, mysterious person, and mutant.

Inspired by the old school Galaga, which was produced by Japan-based game company, Namco, Phelios' lead developer, Patrice Krysztofiak created Kaijin and felt a need to incorporate some of his inspirations' Japanese roots. This is also the reason why the sprites have Japanese names.

The Ways
